Firstly, I would like to let the police who write on this forum that I respect them for taking the time listen to car enthusiasts and try to explain the reasoning behind laws and their enforcement, and some of the consequences of breaking regulations that on the surface seem illogical. Not many cops from around where I am are prepared to do that.
The only interactions that the car enthusiasts(I will use that term because 'racers' or any term relating to speed is not politically correct and is barely even legal in Australia) around where I am from ever seem to have with police are, "excuse me sir, but do you realise what speed you were travelling at?" or "Fuck off, pig."
I admit, I have encountered individual police officers who I have disliked but i also have not fallen into the trap of thinking, "all the cops are fucking powertrippers and are out to get me" that most 'racers' seem to have adopted. Sure, some are, but they are the ones booking people the most, so they are the ones that modified car drivers meet most often. When I lost my licence the first time, the cop who pulled me was really professional and had a good attitude and was a nice bloke, so I am not resentful of the fact that they have booked me in the past, I am just frustrated at the way the enthusiast/cop relationship is headed and its inevitable consequences on a hobby I am passinate about.
The more the relationship between the law enforcement and the car community declines, the stricter laws are going to become, and the more pissed off cops will become at having to enforce ridiculous shit. This forum seems to be a really good way for some of the people from the car scene to get to know cops as people and understand the reasons why they do what they do, rather than being afraid of the unknown. It also lets members of the law enforcement bodies understand the attitudes of the people who are breaking the law, why they do it, and hopefully from this, be able to reach a conclusion as to which laws and regulations are having a positive effect on the road toll and which ones are simply breeding contempt for the police. I apreciate that it is not always the cop's fault for booking people, and one shouldnt shoot the messenger, but the majority of the performance cars community resents the police, rather than the legislators.
What i am leading into is, how would I go about starting a similar interaction between members of the car fraternity here and representatives of the Queensland Police? Any suggestions as to how I should go about putting this proposal to the police would be appreciated.
