how much to ask for my bike...
i know this is long, but bear with me... i'm going to sell my 1986 Honda VFR 700 and need to know where to reasonably set the reserve (minimum selling price). i know that everyone always thinks their bike is worth more than it really is. i've read the sticky in the classified section about pricing used bikes, but i'm stumped because my bike has a bunch of new stuff but also needs some work. first, what it's got: - 1986 VFR 700 in good to fair condition, bone stock but for the exhaust. it is clean and straight but has the usual minor scratches, scrapes and pitted aluminum you'd expect on a bike that old. - Yosh pipe, but god only knows how old it is. the exhaust has surface rust but is solid; the can is tarnished. - 43,000 miles, but adult owned and ridden almost since new. i'm the third owner; the first owner bought it when he was 18 and, according to the second owner, sold it about a year later. - i bought it a year ago. in that time, i have installed or had my mechanic install: new front EBC rotors and pads new chain and sprockets new Dunlop tires (the model escapes me; the have less than 100 miles on them) new clutch and brake levers new brake and clutch fluid new barrel/round key ignition lock (some idiot popped my lock and went for a joyride; no damage to the bike, though) the bike starts on the first try, runs strong and handles nicely. i have receipts for all of the work i've done and receipts for most of the work the previous owner has done. the repair history of the bike can be traced almost to new. now, the problem: my mechanic tells me it needs a carb rebuild (gaskets and o-rings are shot), valve cover gaskets, intake boots and a water pump gasket. the labor's gonna be a killer if i can find a mechanic willing to do it (mine won't; he said it will take him too much time), and i don't have the time or inclination to do the work myself as i don't have a garage. i've been thinking of upgrading to a better/newer bike anyway, and this is one more reason to do so. my mechanic, who works exclusively on older Hondas, tells me the VFR is something of a cult bike and that mine is a solid example that would be a good candidate for a restoration. it also could be ridden as is as long as the owner keeps the fluids topped up. Kelley Blue Book range is $1285 to $1945; NADA Guide range is $1280 to $1680. Similar bikes on eBay have gone for as much as $2,000 recently. I'm not looking to screw anyone, and I will be completely upfront in explaining the bike's problems when I sell it. I just want to know the reasonable minimum bid I should accept for the bike. thanks for reading the long post, and thanks for any guidance... |
