Okay, this was just soo wierd (and friggin scary when it happened).
I was at Englishtown Raceway Park, at the XXth Annual Sport Compact Fall Nationals. First round, I would up running a fellow team member of mine, Eric (based on best R/T's, they line up all the entrants, and while my best R/T was a 0.005, his best was a 0.511, putting him dead last, and me in first). First gear (on the launch), the clutch slipped (I rolled across the beams with a decent R/T, but about 4-5 ft. into it, the clutch slipped), and he was already off and moving, so I dumped the throttle, and slowly closed the distance (I dialed 14.53, he dialed 14.50). 1/8 mile, he's out in front by 2 car lengths roughly, as I'm closing fast. At the 1000 ft, as I shift into 4th (85mph), I'm only back by 1 length - he had lifted, and now I'm coming up quick. We near the finish line, and all of a sudden, over the radio (tuned to 90.3 so I can hear what the guys in the tower say about me...) I hear "HOLY SHIT, WTF is going on here?"
Right then, as I cross the final beams just behind Eric, I suddenly see one wheel right at the top of my windshield, then another appears, followed by a third. Next thing I know, there's a small single-prop aircraft about 50 yards off the ground, coming right at me, and coming down fast. Keep in mind, I'm hauling at nearly 90mph already on the brakes. He comes down right between me (1995 MX6) and Eric (2004 350Z silver). I slam on the brakes, and bring the car QUICKLY (an understatement...) into the grass. I then countersteer and slide the car across the slick grass, as the wing of the airplane came within an inch of my car.
I then look over, and see that Eric, at about 40-45mph, hit the concrete wall, damaging the front end, although I didn't notice much else.
In the meantime, the plane actually touched down for a moment, then upon seeing two (we were the last of brackets to run) NHRA Funny Car dragsters coming at him, goes 100% throttle, lifts the flaps, and attempts to get off the ground. In the meantime, his right wing NARROWLY misses hitting one of the track photographers, barely cleared before he passed the two funny's (who were doing their burnouts and had to pull the 'chute to stop in time), and made it over the tower (covers the entry lanes... this plane couldn't go around, so he had to go over) as the guys in the tower were saying their prayers.
I brought the car skidding to a halt about 40-50 ft. past Erics car, on the side of the track (way on the side... to allow EMS and Fire-Rescue crews who were already loaded up and getting going to get around me easily) and ran to my buddy. A little blood, some bent up panels, etc. but he was okay, although the door was stuck (I muscled it open as the EMS was pulling up and got out of their way to allow them to do their job).
Luckily, some people in the crowd (who are probably gonna upload this vid) got some pics and vids, so we will have the tail # of this aircraft. The tower will be calling the FAA, as not only did someone get injured, but quite a few (let's see... me, Eric, the photographer, funny car drivers, not to mention everyone in the tower - driver's meeting for ProFWD, ProRWD, and Sportsmen, so alot of people in there - plus track officials and pit crews) could have been killed had anything gone even a little wrong.
After the adrenaline wore off, I was okay. I lost to Eric in the race, and since his car was severely damaged, neither of us made it to the next round. However, thankfully, I walked away with a muddied and scratched, but otherwise okay, mx6 and no scrapes or bruises. Eric, while his car is going into the shop and he has several cuts cuts, he was able to walk away with just a couple of bandages. The funny car drivers were pissed, had their hair messed up, but are okay. And the tower was okay, although the two of them couldn't stop talking about it. Apparently it's a first in ERP history, and they were checking to see whether it's a first in US history.
