What is "IRC"? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Its similar to AIM chat in the sense that you have rooms and multiple people can join rooms and chat. It is all real-time, and there are a variety of clients available.

If you have windows, try mIRC (www.mIRC.com).
If you have OS9, try ircle (www.ircle.com)
If you have OSX or any Unix varient, use BitchX (ftp.bitchx.com)
