IIRC for it to be legal it had to A. Be of the same or a newer model year as the vehicle, B. Be a USDM engine, C. Available as an original option (such as a 3800II -> LS1 in a 98+ Fbody). Don't hold that to your salt, but I'm fairly sure thats it.

Theres other shit though, like people swapping 350s into RX7s, but I don't know the specifics of it.
