Sorry about your wife ... and your car. Unfortunately the Corolla you have is really lame so you'll pretty much be exploring new territory considering any swap or turbo.
The 2ZZGE w/ VVTi from the Celica GTS or 2004+ Corolla XRS will probably fit -- it's from the same family as the 1ZZFE that I think is in there now. (Go look on your block and double check.) Swapping the transaxle to make it manual should be straightforward, but you'll most likely need the one from your Corolla's generation and don't try to stick the 6 speed from the Celica in there. I don't think there are any already turbo'd motor options out there for you without major fabrication, but there are kits

At the very worst you should get a 1ZZFE with VVT, which I believe was introduced in 2000.
