I talked to an officer the other day about that exact question. The law states that brake lights must be red and turn signals must be red or amber.
There is another citation that po's give that says that anything that isnt stock can be a violation (Altezza's) unless they have been tested to show that they are street worthy.
When I asked the officer he told me that if you have just red light bulbs only covered by the clear plastic it is not enough and most likely you would get pulled over, but if you have red light bulbs with that red covering on it before the clear plastic, like altezza's that he personally would not pull you over because those give off sufficient red light, but that cops can pull you over and cite you for the second law.
I just say if you want Altezza's get proof that they have been tested as street worthy, if you cant then know that it will give them a reason to pull you over (not a very good one) But then again going through a yellow light isnt a good one either, and Ive been hit for that, didnt get a ticket just harrassed and searched.
